Hunting Island State Park
Hunting Island State Park is one of South Carolina's most popular parks. Located on the 5,000-acre barrier Hunting Island off the Atlantic coast, the Park combines a natural setting with year-round recreational opportunities and numerous outdoor activities. Although its name hints at its past life as a hunting ground for deer, waterfowl and small game, these days Hunting Island , South Carolina acts as a nature preserve. Among the wildlife that has been sighted at Hunting Island State Park are raccoons, alligators, eastern diamondback rattlesnakes and loggerhead turtles, which nest there in the summer. Hunting Island , South Carolina is also an appealing birding destination, as it is frequented by numerous species of resident and migratory birds, such as painted buntings, pelicans, oystercatchers, herons and egrets.
Outdoor activities offered at Hunting Island State Park include swimming, boating, kayaking and fishing. A 1,120-foot fishing pier is located at the southern end of the island. Hunting Island State Park is also home to an eight-mile hiking and mountain biking trail as well as three nature trails, ranging from a third of a mile to one mile in length (one-way). One of the Hunting Island paths leads to a historic 19th-century lighthouse, which reopened to the public in the winter of 2005 after closing for repairs and renovations.
For visitors wishing to stay the night, Hunting Island State Park offers campgrounds with electric and water hookups, additional campsites for tent camping, a group camping area, and cabins with one to three bedrooms. A picnic shelter is available on Hunting Island.
Hunting Island State Park is located 16 miles east of Beaufort, South Carolina. A project of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, the park is listed on the National Register. Today's visitors to Hunting Island, South Carolina will see a semi-tropical maritime forest, a saltwater marsh, a manmade lagoon, more than four miles of beach, and sand dunes covered with such vegetation as the Cabbage palmetto, South Carolina's state tree.
