Coastal Discovery Museum

The Coastal Discovery Museum gives visitors just what its name suggests: a closer look at the wildlife, the history and the heritage of Hilton Head Island and the other Sea Islands. From its home base at the northern end of Hilton Head Island, Coastal Discovery Museum invites visitors to explore the coastal area through indoor and outdoor exhibits, tours, cruises and special programs. Outdoor displays at the Coastal Discovery Museum include a wildflower and butterfly garden, a nature trail along a neighboring salt marsh, and models of 18th-century saxon vats used in the production of indigo dye. Inside the Coastal Discovery Museum are a history timeline, an exhibit focusing on the importance of biodiversity, the Sea Island Classroom and a museum store.

Tours and cruises sponsored by the Coastal Discovery Museum include a nature kayaking tour, a dolphin cruise, a beach tour, a walking tour of a national wildlife refuge, tours of Civil War forts, and plantation tours. Among the most popular tours at the Coastal Discovery Museum is the Turtle Talk & Walk, offered each summer. Tour participants actually visit the nesting habitat and nest sites of the loggerhead sea turtle, the threatened species that nests along Hilton Head Island's 14 miles of beach. Other offerings at the Coastal Discovery Museum include lectures, themed birthday parties and the monthly SkyWatch astronomy program. The Coastal Discovery Museum also oversees Honey Horn, a 68-acre tract of land with a dozen historic homes.

The Coastal Discovery Museum is located on three acres of land that overlook Jarvis Creek.

Coastal Discovery Museum Fees
Nature tours and history tours last approximately one-and-a-half to two hours and cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. Cruises are extra. Reservations are required.
