Bluffton-Okatie, SC

Okatie and Bluffton, SC makes a delightful addition to your Hilton Head Island getaway. You don't even have to go out of your way to get to Bluffton-Okatie, SC. A drive to Hilton Head Island will take you through the Bluffton-Okatie area, accessible to Hilton Head via the bridge that connects "The Golf Island" to the mainland. As you travel through Okatie and Bluffton, SC, located in the fastest-growing region of the state, you're sure to notice an interesting blend of old and new. You'll find planned communities, such as Okatie's Sun City Hilton Head and Oldfield, along with factory outlets, shopping centers and accommodations. Even though the golf courses of Hilton Head are nearby, Bluffton, SC offers a couple of dozen more private, semiprivate and public golf courses.

Perhaps the most distinctive draw in the Bluffton-Okatie, SC area is its history, best seen in the National Register Historic District of Old Town Bluffton. Once a summertime vacation destination for plantation owners living in the Lowcountry, Bluffton, SC boasts surprisingly few antebellum buildings. Most were destroyed by Union troops stationed at Hilton Head Island during the Civil War. The surviving buildings in Bluffton include the Episcopal Church of the Cross and the Heyward House Historic Center, a Carolina Farmhouse-style home open for public tours. Another landmark in Bluffton's historic district is Secession Oak, where secession was a hot debate topic prior to the Civil War.

Bluffton, SC is also home to bed and breakfasts, art galleries, shops and restaurants. Visitors to the Bluffton-Okatie, SC area may enjoy a visit to the Bluffton Oyster Factory, a kayaking tour along the May River or a trip to the nearby Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge.
