Beaufort, South Carolina

Beaufort , South Carolina not only offers easy access to the famed resorts of Hilton Head Island, it's also an unforgettable vacation destination in its own right. Civil War buffs and other history lovers are especially susceptible to Beaufort , SC's charms. Once a favorite spot of the plantation owners of South Carolina 's Lowcountry, Beaufort still features dozens of antebellum mansions and other buildings. Unlike many Southern communities, Beaufort , South Carolina escaped destruction during the Civil War because Union troops set up headquarters there. Today, the entire downtown area of Beaufort , SC has been designated a historic district. The nearby Town of Port Royal also boasts a number of historic sites. Among the historic attractions in Beaufort , South Carolina are the Verdier House, an excellent example of Federal architecture; the Beaufort Museum, a local history museum located inside an 1852 arsenal; and St. Helena's Episcopal Church and Cemetery, where tombstones served as makeshift operating tables during the Civil War. Architecture in Beaufort reflects a variety of styles, fitting for an area that attracted French, Spanish and British explorers in centuries past. Visitors to downtown Beaufort , SC may enjoy browsing through the art galleries, boutiques and antique shops or soaking up the sights while riding on a horse-drawn carriage.

Beaufort is located on Port Royal Island, one of the larger Sea Islands along South Carolina’s Treasured Coast. Popular outdoor activities in the Beaufort, South Carolina area include fishing, shrimping, crabbing, sailing, kayaking and birding. In addition to the natural treasures of South Carolina ’s Lowcountry, the area is rich in cultural pursuits. The city of Beaufort , South Carolina serves as the county seat for Beaufort County, which also includes Bluffton, Hilton Head Island and Daufuskie Island. The area is the long-time host to the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station and the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island.
